Author Of The Week

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian playwright & short – story writer . He produced 14 plays & wrote over 200 short stories .

He was born on 29th January , 1860 & died on 15th July , 1904 . He was one of the most illustrious & celebrated short – story writer in the history of literature; a trained physician, he pursued his career of a medical man without abandoning his passion for writing which he discovered when he was young .

Interestingly , writing happened accidentally to Chekov who started off by writing humorous letters to his family in Moscow , while he was in Taganrog to uplift their morale as the family faced trying times .

Anton Chekov was the third of the six children born to Pavel Yegorovich & Yevgeniya Chekov in Taganrog in southern Russia . His father was a devoted orthodox Christian & Director of the Parish choir.

He ran grocery store , while his mother was a story teller . He attained much of his preliminary education from a faculty that was essentially for Greek boys , before enrolling at the Taganrog Gymnasium . as a toddler , he contributed as a singer in his father’s choir also because of the Orthodox Monastery .

In 1876 , thanks to his father’s bankruptcy , the family shifted to Moscow but Anton stayed on as he was pursuing his education . He took up odd jobs to support a living &finance his studies . He engaged in reading & writing extensively .

Completing his studies in 1879 , he moved to Moscow to help his family . Therein , he gained admission at the I.M. Sechenov, first Moscow state Medical University, during the mid 1880.

Chekhov practiced as a physician & began to publish serious works of fiction under his own name . One of his stories “ THE STEPPE” was an important success , earning its author the PUSHKIN PRIZE in 1888 .

Chekhov wrote many of his greatest works from the 1890s through the previous couple of years of his life . In his short stories of that period , including “ WARD NO. 6” , “THE LADY WITH THE DOG” , “GOOSEBERRIES” & plays – “ THE SEAGULL” , “ THE CHERRY ORCHARD” & “ UNCLE VANYA", he revealed a profound understanding of human nature & the ways in which ordinary events can carry deeper meaning .

There is no proper resolution in the end of his works but it carries the theme of love , modernity , wealth , status etc .

After being in romantic relationship with a couple of women , he finally tied the knot with OLGA KNIPPER in 1901 . The marriage resulted from an agreement according to which they would be married but would live differently , he in YALTA & she in MOSCOW .

In 1902 OLGA suffered from a miscarriage . Through some claim that the conception may have occurred when Chekhov & Olga were apart , Russian scholars have refuted the same .

Throughout his life he suffered from tuberculosis which worsened by the time his end approached .

In 1897 , he suffered from a serious haemorrhage of the lungs . In 1940 , he was terminally ill with tuberculosis . By June , he moved to a spa town together with his wife Olga . He breathed his last after a shot of Camphor & a glass of Champagne .

Following his death his body was transported in a refrigerated railway car to Moscow , where he was buried next to his father at the Novodevichy Cemetry .

if Anton Chekov was alive in this century based on his personality there are Three Quotes that resonate his life.

"LOVE TO LIVE AND NOT LIVE TO BE LOVED."

"SIX LETTER WORD THAT BRINGS HAPPINESS AND DISTRESS - 'WEALTH'."

"YELLOW LEAVES WERE ONCE GREEN."
