Magic Realism


Magic realism is a part of the realism genre of fiction. Magic realism (or magical realism) is an Aesthetic Style or Genre of Fiction in which magical elements appear in an otherwise realistic setting.


The term was initially used by German art critic Franh Roh to describe a painting that demonstrated a misused reality but was later used by Arturo Uslar-Pietri to describe the work of certain Latin American writers.


Magic realism is marked by its inventive content, vivid effects, amazing mystery, and combining fantastic elements with realistic details. It is a literary genre and a style of fiction in which magical elements appear in an otherwise realist setting.


It strictly adheres to facts and the realist tone of its narrative when presenting magical happenings. It combines the two opposing aspects of the oxymoron as the magical and the realistic.


It spans nearly a century. It was first established in Germany in 1920.


The first phase- Franz Roh, a German art critic applied the term in 1925.


The second phase took its roots in Central America.


The third phase began in 1955 in Latin America.


Magical realism appears in countries with long histories of mythology and socio-political turmoil- e.g. Cuban Revolution


Magical realism portrays fantastical events in an otherwise realistic tone. It brings fables, folk tales, and myths into contemporary social relevance. Fantasy traits given to characters, such as levitation, telepathy, and telekinesis, help to encompass modern political realities that can be phantasmagorical.
